Maybe tomorrow the plan of building a casino near Chicago in DeKalb County III will be clearer after the public hearing. The Prairie Band of Potawatomi Indians of Kansas, the owner of the site, will have a public hearing tomorrow, August 11. The meeting may finally make clear the tribes plans for the land.
The Prairie Band of Potawatomi Indians of Kansas bought a 128-acre parcel of farmland near Shabbona, III last May for $9 million or $70,000 an acre. The same thing happen in Dekalb County, an agricultural land was sold for no more than $30,000 per acre. The idea is to build a casino on the land purchased. The site is near I-88 that connects the location with the metro Chicago area.
The complicated part arose when the Potawatomi claimed that the parcel of a larger aggregate of land near Shabbona, about 1,280 acres, belonged to them. The Potawatomi claimed the land under a 1830s treaty with the federal government in 2001. On the other hand, the government acknowledged the legitimacy of the Potawatomi claim to the land, but it doesn't confer ownership.
Making matters worse, the acknowledgement is the starting point of long negotiations between the tribe and the federal government.
The plan for a casino on the Potawatomi-claimed land has been put on hold while they try to decide how to proceed.
